Today we remember Senator Alex Gallacher, who left us far too soon.
I have had the great pleasure of knowing Senator Gallacher for more than 27 years, working with him at the Transport Workers’ Union where his priorities were reflected in making the transport industry fairer and safer.
The Australian Senate is a better place for the experiences of Senator Gallacher, a labourer, a truck driver and union representative – these experiences would provide greater insight for various Committees but not least in his roles in Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport, and Road Safety.
It was during his first speech that Senator Gallacher said, ‘Australians want a better environment and a greater opportunity for those who come after them and I will endeavour to fulfil that obligation in my role here in the Senate’.
There is no doubt that during his time in the Senate, serving the Australian public, Senator Gallacher achieved this.
My thoughts today are with Paola and the entirety of Alex’s family.
Vale Senator Gallacher.
