Today’s talk from Josh Frydenberg about getting Australia’s unemployment figure down means little without an actual plan to get more Australians into secure jobs.
Australians have shown remarkable resilience during what has been an incredibly anxious period with bushfires followed by COVID-19.
What we need is a government that sets out a clear plan for COVID recovery that will see Australia emerge from the pandemic stronger, not just return to the same conditions that saw people working more for less.
Instead of borrowing from the tired Liberal playbook and talking about savings measures, the government’s economic priority must start with getting Australians vaccinated.
We need the government to take responsibility for the pandemic, that means fixing its bungled and confusing vaccine rollout and showing leadership when it comes to Australia’s quarantine arrangements and borders. Both these issues are core federal responsibilities.
Today, the Treasurer needs to explain when the government will fix those issues and also outline a clear plan for Australia’s Covid-19 recovery that will get Australians secure jobs and build our sovereign capability.
Australians deserve a government which is focused on getting the basics right, not just the optics.
